The Source
Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication framework. Unlike most of the other sources in this project, NVC came in already deeply known and personally practiced through years of annual study, rather than newly researched for the curriculum.
Core Ideas (from the project so far)
- Observation without evaluation — describe what happened, don't editorialize. The expressive mirror of "noticing shifts, not diagnosing" used elsewhere in the curriculum.
- Feeling — name your own emotional state plainly.
- Need — identify the underlying need driving the feeling. Maps directly onto the Needs Map (Significance, Approval, Acceptance, Intelligence, Pity, Strength) used elsewhere — same lens, turned on yourself.
- Request, not demand — something the other person can decline without consequence. Close to a formal definition of the curriculum's own non-manipulative standard.
- Function in the curriculum — the answer to "how do I say the hard thing without triggering defensiveness," paired with the Listening Half (Module 3) as the curriculum's two conversational halves.
